Who Is Eligible?
Persons who held Lithuanian citizenship before 15 June 1940, as well as their descendants (children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren), have an unlimited right to restore Lithuanian citizenship, provided it was not acquired before 1 April 2011.
Citizenship and Dual Nationality
- Restoration is generally available only to persons who are not citizens of another state. If another citizenship exists, it must usually be renounced.
- Exception: persons deported from occupied Lithuania, those who left Lithuania before 11 March 1990, and their descendants may retain dual citizenship.
Important Limitations
- Citizenship may be restored only once.
- Citizenship cannot be restored to persons who committed international crimes or crimes against the Republic of Lithuania.
